About the work
Housing is the aspect of planning that focuses mainly on residential planning and living space. Key factors when considering housing are economics and quality of life for an individual: Who can afford to live here and what kind of house will they like or need to live in? How and where will they work? Nearby necessities? And so on... Originally the piece was supposed to be a video art piece but technology, being the harsh mistress that she is, has deemed that not so. This small painting will hopefully visually map out the idea of housing in an easy-to-understand way. I'd like the viewer to learn, as I did, what different factors are involved in housing. Maybe not the myriad of factors. Hopefully that there IS a myriad.
The collaboration with Carolyn Schutten definitely influenced the piece. My partner was very helpful at all times and was able to introduce me to the different ideas and processes that go into "housing." I feel I can make a more cohesive piece as a result and hopefully create awareness in anyone who views the piece which is the ultimate goal.
What I got out of the this collaboration was definitely some new information and new perspectives as well as a greater understanding for my environment and how we as a people change it. Also, a halfway decent painting.
While drawing these images I had in mind all the different elements that Carolyn was able to teach me about and how they were related. I knew I wanted to convey the idea that there were a myriad of factors involved with our topic "Housing." If personified, Housing is the center and largest face surrounded by various factors that need to be considered when considering her: economics, resources, people, sustainable lifestyle, recycling, etc. I tried to add a nod or two to some interesting talking points I've heard throughout this project like the seven generations idea shown with seven skulls. All these ideas are connected to housing in some way and so they are in the painting.
